Johnny Appleseed: A Voice in the Wilderness
Popularized by Walt Disney Studios and local events all over America, the historical John “Appleseed” Chapman is as large as his legend. A conservationist, horticulturist, hero of the War of 1812, and spiritual visionary, John Chapman was known as “the St. Francis of the frontier.” He loved animals and lived in harmony with nature and local Native American tribes. According to one contemporary report, “He goes barefooted, can sleep anywhere ... and lives upon the coarsest and most scanty fare. He has actually thawed ice with his bare feet.” A republication of a classic anthology, Johnny Appleseed: A Voice in the Wilderness offers readers an opportunity to explore the extraordinary truth behind the popular persona, following Chapman from his birth in 1774 through his pioneering travels on America’s frontier. It also introduces readers to Chapman’s inspiration, eighteenth-century spiritual visionary Emanuel Swedenborg, whose works Chapman passed out to pioneer families whom he met on his journeys through the American frontier. He would even enter settlements like a town crier, proclaiming, “Good news fresh from heaven!”
